Before selling your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch in the Watch app: tap All Watches, the info button next to your watch, then Unpair Apple Watch. Unpairing creates a backup of the watch on your iPhone and lets you pair it with your new phone afterwards.
Why should I unpair first?
A watch paired to a phone you no longer have can be hard to move to a new iPhone. Unpairing saves its data and, if you are also selling the watch, removes Activation Lock from it.
How do I unpair, step by step?
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together.
- Open the Watch app and tap All Watches.
- Tap the info button next to your watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm.
- For cellular watches, choose whether to keep or remove the plan.
What if I am keeping the watch?
Pair it with your new iPhone and restore from the backup when asked. If you have already moved to a new iPhone with Quick Start, you may be prompted to move the watch automatically.
What if I am selling the watch too?
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Unpair it | Removes Activation Lock |
| Cancel the cellular plan | Stops charges |
| Add it to the same quote | One box, one payment |
See sell Apple Watch and selling devices together, then finish the iPhone checklist.
