You can remove an iPhone from your Apple Account by signing out on the phone, by choosing Remove from Account on another Apple device, or by selecting Remove This Device at icloud.com/find. All three release Activation Lock so the phone can be reset and sold.
Which method should I use?
| Situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| You still have the phone and it works | Settings > your name > Sign Out |
| Phone is broken or already shipped | icloud.com/find > Remove This Device |
| You have another iPhone, iPad or Mac | Settings > your name > select device > Remove from Account |
How do I remove it from another Apple device?
- On your new iPhone, open Settings and tap your name.
- Scroll to the device list and tap the old iPhone.
- Tap Remove from Account.
If the old phone is still listed in Find My, also remove it there.
Does removing the device erase it?
Not by itself. If you still have the phone, erase it as well; see how to factory reset an iPhone.
What if the phone belongs to someone else?
Only the account owner can remove it. If you bought a used phone that is still locked, contact the seller. We cannot buy an iPhone that is still tied to an Apple Account.
Can I sell a broken iPhone that is still on my account?
Yes, once you remove it remotely. We buy broken iPhones that power on, and review dead ones by email. Get a quote once it is removed.
