Selling an iPhone That Won't Turn On: Your Options

Try charging and a forced restart first. If it still will not turn on, a buyback can review it manually, or a certified recycler can take it.

Selling an iPhone That Won't Turn On: Your Options

Before selling an iPhone that will not turn on, charge it for an hour with a known-good cable and try a forced restart; many "dead" phones simply have a flat battery. If it still does not start, email us the model and what happened for a manual review, or recycle it with a certified e-waste recycler.

How do I check if it is really dead?

  1. Charge for at least an hour with a different cable and adapter.
  2. Force restart: press volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. Connect it to a computer and see if it is recognized.

Why can't it go through the instant quote?

A phone that will not start cannot be tested, erased or checked for Activation Lock, so a fixed price is not possible up front.

What are my options?

Certified recyclingOld models with no value

Should I remove it from my Apple Account?

Yes. Even a dead phone should be removed at icloud.com/find so its next owner, or the recycler, can use the parts. See removing an iPhone from your account.

If it does turn on, try the broken iPhone quote instead. Contact us via the contact page for a manual review.
